CW: Flickering Lights
Produced on July 4th, 2026 during the so called 250th anniversary of the United States while I was a Film & Media resident at the Vermont Studio Center. This animation is made from 750 microscope photographs of three slurs I have been called in public. 250 photos each. This experimental animation touches on transgender issues, such as bio-essentialism. The colorization was done in a histography software and the soundtrack is a white noise generate from code I wrote that takes the visual information from a video and translates it into an audio waveform. The use of flicker film style editing is intentional and meant to represent the violence of empire. As a queer elder, who survived the AIDs crisis of the 80s and 90s, recently told me: "When a war is being wage on your body, it's extremely difficult to be in a room full of people who are living life like everything is normal." This animation is meant to capture this feeling while being rooted in lived experience and political theory. The three slurs are illegible in the piece and are the following, "whore, faggot, tranny."
